Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the average — add all the values and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the data is sorted (or the average of the two middle values). The mode is the value that appears most often. They can differ a lot in skewed data, which is why this calculator gives you all three.
When should I use median instead of mean?
Use the median when your data has outliers or is skewed — for example incomes or house prices, where a few very large values pull the mean upward. The median represents the typical middle value and isn't distorted by extremes, so it often describes the centre of skewed data better than the mean.
What is standard deviation, and why are there two?
Standard deviation measures how spread out the values are around the mean — a small value means the data is tightly clustered, a large one means it's widely dispersed. The population standard deviation is used when your data is the entire group; the sample standard deviation (dividing by n−1) is used when your data is a sample of a larger population. The tool shows both.

What are quartiles and the IQR?
Quartiles split sorted data into four equal parts: Q1 is the 25th percentile, Q2 is the median, and Q3 is the 75th percentile. The interquartile range (IQR) is Q3 minus Q1 and describes the spread of the middle 50% of the data, a measure that ignores extreme outliers.
