The factors are based on average data: a petrol car emits around 0.21 kg of CO2 per kilometre, grid electricity in India about 0.82 kg per unit, and a long-haul flight a large amount per passenger. Diet matters more than most people expect, because red meat is far more carbon-intensive than plants. It comes from the energy and fuel behind everything you do: driving, flying, heating and powering your home, and the food you eat. This calculator adds up the emissions from your transport, flights, home energy and diet to give a single annual figure you can compare and act on.
How accurate is this carbon calculator?
It gives a reasonable estimate using average emission factors, such as around 0.21 kg of CO2 per kilometre for a petrol car and 0.82 kg per unit of grid electricity in India. Your real emissions depend on your specific vehicle, your local electricity mix, the airline and aircraft, and many other details. Treat the result as a directional guide to where your impact is concentrated, not a precise audit.
What is a good carbon footprint?
The average personal footprint in India is about 1.9 tonnes a year, well below the global average of around 4.5 tonnes and far below the US figure of roughly 14.5 tonnes. The Paris Agreement implies a target of around 2 tonnes per person by 2050 to limit warming. So a footprint under about 2 tonnes is broadly in line with climate goals, while anything above the global average leaves clear room to cut back.
What's the best way to reduce my footprint?
Focus on your single biggest category, which the calculator highlights for you. For many people that is flying or driving, so flying less and switching to public transport, carpooling or an electric vehicle has the largest effect. Cutting red meat, using efficient appliances and LED lighting, and adding rooftop solar all help too. Small habits add up, but the biggest wins come from your highest-emitting activity.
Does diet really affect my carbon footprint?
Yes, significantly. Food can account for a large share of personal emissions, and red meat is especially intensive: beef produces roughly 27 kg of CO2 per kilogram, against under 7 kg for chicken. A heavy meat-eater's diet can emit around 3.3 tonnes a year, while a vegetarian diet is closer to 1.7 tonnes and a vegan diet lower still. Shifting even a few meals a week towards plants makes a measurable difference.
