Understand your electricity bill, unit by unit
An electricity bill calculator turns the units on your meter into rupees so you can check a bill or plan your spending. In India, domestic supply is charged in telescopic slabs: the first block of units is billed at a low rate, and each higher block costs more. That is why two homes in the same state can pay very different rates per unit depending on how much they consume.
This tool applies approximate 2026 slab rates for ten major states, or a custom flat rate for anywhere else, and shows a clear slab-wise breakdown of how the energy charge builds up. If you do not know your units, switch to the appliance estimator: enter how long you run your fan, air conditioner, fridge, geyser and other appliances, and it calculates the units using the simple watts × hours × days formula. The air conditioner and geyser are usually the biggest contributors, which is useful to see before a hot month.
Keep in mind that a real bill adds fixed charges, electricity duty, fuel surcharge adjustments and taxes on top of the energy charge, and some categories receive subsidies or free units. So treat this as a close estimate of the energy portion rather than the final figure, and always confirm the current tariff with your state electricity board. How is an electricity bill calculated from units?
Your meter records energy used in units, where one unit equals one kilowatt-hour (kWh). State electricity boards charge in telescopic slabs, so the first block of units is cheaper and the rate rises as you use more. This calculator applies your state's slab rates to your units to estimate the energy charge. Real bills also add fixed charges, duty and taxes, which vary by board.
How do I work out units from my appliances?
Units equal watts multiplied by hours used, divided by 1000, multiplied by days. For example, a 1500 W air conditioner run 6 hours a day for 30 days uses 1500 × 6 × 30 ÷ 1000 = 270 units. The Estimate from appliances tab does this for common appliances automatically, so you can see which ones drive your bill.
Why is my actual bill different from this estimate?
This tool estimates the energy charge from slab rates only. Your real bill also includes fixed or demand charges, electricity duty, fuel surcharge adjustments and meter rent, and some states give subsidies or free units to certain categories. Treat the result as a close estimate of the energy portion, not the final amount.
What if my state is not listed?
Choose Custom rate and enter your own per-unit rate, which you can find on a recent bill or your electricity board's tariff page. The calculator will multiply your units by that flat rate. This is handy for states not in the list or for a quick single-rate estimate.
How often do electricity tariffs change?
State regulators usually revise tariffs once a year, and fuel surcharge adjustments can change more often. The rates here are approximate for 2026. Always verify the current rates with your state electricity board before relying on the figure for budgeting or billing.
