About this tool
Working with business days
A business days calculator answers two everyday questions that calendar arithmetic gets wrong: how many working days lie between two dates, and what date falls a given number of working days from now. Because so much of the world — banks, couriers, courts and offices — only operates Monday to Friday, counting in working days gives a far more realistic answer than counting raw calendar days, especially when a weekend or public holiday sits in the middle.
In count between dates mode, enter a start and end date and the tool walks through every day in the range, counting only Mondays to Fridays. Tick the holiday option and it also removes US federal holidays — New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas — which it computes automatically for the right year, including the ones that fall on a different date each year.
In add business days mode, enter a start date and a number of working days to add. The calculator steps forward one day at a time, skipping weekends, until it has counted that many business days, and shows you the resulting date and weekday. Enter a negative number to count backwards — useful for working out the latest day you can start something to hit a deadline.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
A business day is a standard working day — Monday to Friday — excluding weekends. In the 'count' mode you can also exclude US public holidays so the result reflects true working days. Business days are the unit used for delivery times, bank processing, contractual notice periods and project deadlines.
How do I add business days to a date?
Switch to the 'Add business days' tab, enter a start date and the number of working days to add, and the calculator steps forward day by day, skipping Saturdays and Sundays, until it has counted that many business days. Enter a negative number to count backwards instead.
Does it account for public holidays?
In the 'count between dates' mode you can tick 'Exclude public holidays' to leave out US federal holidays such as Thanksgiving, Independence Day and Memorial Day, which are calculated automatically for the relevant year. The 'add business days' mode skips weekends only, since holidays vary widely by country and company.
Why are business days used instead of calendar days?
Many real-world processes only happen on working days — shipping carriers, banks, courts and offices are typically closed at weekends. Quoting a deadline in business days gives a far more realistic estimate than calendar days, especially across a long weekend or holiday period.
