About this tool

Convert weight and mass with confidence

Weighing scales speak different languages around the world — kilograms in most countries, pounds and ounces in the US, and stone for body weight in Britain. This weight and mass converter bridges them all on a single screen: type a value into any unit and every other unit updates at the same moment, using the exact international definition that a pound is 0.45359237 kilograms.

The metric range runs from tonnes down to micrograms, and the imperial range covers pounds, ounces and stone. Because "ton" is ambiguous, the converter lists the metric tonne (1,000 kg), the US short ton (2,000 lb) and the UK long ton (2,240 lb) as separate units so you never mix them up. The carat is included too for gemstone weights, at exactly 0.2 grams.

This makes the tool handy for cooking and baking, shipping and postage, fitness and body weight, science labs and jewellery alike. Conversions are exact where the definitions are exact, and displayed to a sensible precision. As with every CrispToolHub tool, the calculation happens entirely in your browser — there's no account, no limit, and nothing you enter ever leaves your device.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert kilograms to pounds?

One kilogram equals about 2.20462 pounds, because a pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Enter your weight in the Kilogram box and the Pound box updates instantly — for example, 70 kg is about 154.3 lb.

How many kilograms are in a stone?

One stone equals 14 pounds, which is about 6.35029 kilograms. So 12 stone is roughly 76.2 kg. The stone is still widely used for body weight in the UK and Ireland, and this converter handles it alongside kilograms and pounds.

What is the difference between a metric tonne, a short ton and a long ton?

A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms (about 2,205 lb). A US short ton is 2,000 pounds (about 907 kg), and a UK long ton is 2,240 pounds (about 1,016 kg). They're easily confused, so the converter lists all three separately to avoid mistakes.

What is a carat used for?

The carat is a unit of mass for gemstones and pearls, equal to exactly 0.2 grams (200 milligrams). A 1-carat diamond therefore weighs a fifth of a gram. Don't confuse it with the karat that measures gold purity, which is a different thing entirely.

Is mass the same as weight?

Strictly, mass is the amount of matter (measured in kilograms) while weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass. In everyday use the terms are used interchangeably on Earth, which is why this tool is commonly called a weight converter even though it converts units of mass.
