About this tool
From square feet to acres to bigha
Area comes up most often around property — flats measured in square feet, farmland in acres or hectares, and land in South Asia in traditional units like bigha and kanal. This area converter brings them all together: type a value into any unit and every other unit updates instantly, so you can compare a listing in square feet against one in square metres without doing the maths yourself.
On the metric side it covers square kilometres, hectares, square metres and smaller, and on the imperial side square miles, acres, square yards, square feet and square inches, all linked by exact factors (a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m²). Crucially, the tool also includes the Indian land units bigha, biswa, marla and kanal, which are widely used in real estate across India, Pakistan and Nepal.
A word of caution on those traditional units: their size varies considerably by state and region, so this converter uses commonly cited standard values and shows a note to that effect. For any legal or transactional purpose, always confirm the local definition. Everything is calculated in your browser using squared conversion factors (since area is two-dimensional), so results are accurate, instant and completely private.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
One acre equals 43,560 square feet, or about 4,046.86 square metres. Type 1 into the Acre box to see it laid out in square feet, square metres and hectares at once. It's a handy check when reading property listings.
How many acres are in a hectare?
One hectare equals 10,000 square metres, which is about 2.471 acres. So a 5-hectare field is roughly 12.36 acres. The converter shows both at the same time, which is useful when comparing land described in different systems.
What are bigha, biswa, marla and kanal?
These are traditional Indian and South Asian land units. This converter uses widely accepted standard values (1 bigha ≈ 2,529 m², 20 biswa to a bigha, 1 kanal ≈ 506 m², 20 marla to a kanal). Important: these units vary significantly by region and state, so always confirm the local definition for any legal or property transaction.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply square metres by about 10.7639 to get square feet, because one foot is 0.3048 metres and area scales with the square of length. For example, a 100 m² apartment is about 1,076 ft². Just type in the Square metre box.
Why do area conversions square the length factor?
Area is two-dimensional, so when you convert the underlying length unit you square the factor. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.0929 m². The converter applies these squared factors for you, so the results are always correct.
