About this tool

How to build UTM tracking links

When you share a link in an email, an ad or a social post, your analytics needs a way to know where each visit came from. UTM parameters are the standard answer: small tags added to the end of a URL that Google Analytics reads to attribute traffic to a specific source, medium and campaign. A UTM link builder assembles that tagged URL correctly so you don't have to hand-edit query strings.

Paste your destination URL, then fill in the three required tags — source (where the traffic comes from, like google or newsletter), medium (the channel, like cpc or email), and campaign (the promotion name) — plus the optional term and content tags for paid keywords and A/B testing. One-click presets fill in common source/medium pairs for Google Ads, email, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Instagram.

The finished URL appears instantly with a copy button, your recent links are saved for reuse, and a scannable QR code is generated for print and offline campaigns — all created locally in your browser with no third-party service and no cost.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags you add to the end of a link — like ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale — that tell Google Analytics where a click came from. There are five: source (where the traffic originates, e.g. google), medium (the channel, e.g. cpc or email), campaign (the specific promotion), and the optional term (paid keyword) and content (for A/B testing variants).

How do I use a UTM link?

Build the tagged URL here, copy it, and use it anywhere you share a link — in an email, an ad, a social post or a banner. When someone clicks, Google Analytics records the source, medium and campaign you set, so you can see in your reports exactly which channel and campaign drove the visit and any resulting conversions.

What's the difference between source and medium?

Source is the specific origin of the traffic — google, facebook, newsletter, a partner site. Medium is the broad category of channel — cpc (paid search), email, social, referral, organic. So a Facebook ad would be source=facebook, medium=cpc or paid_social, while a Facebook post would be source=facebook, medium=social. Keeping these consistent is what makes your Analytics reports readable.

Should I use uppercase or lowercase in UTM tags?

Always lowercase, and avoid spaces — use underscores or hyphens instead. UTM values are case-sensitive in Google Analytics, so Email and email are counted as two separate mediums, which fragments your data. Pick one convention (lowercase, no spaces) and reuse it everywhere for clean, aggregated reports.

What is the QR code for?

The tool generates a QR code for your finished tracking URL, created entirely in your browser with no third-party service. It's handy for print and offline campaigns — posters, packaging, business cards, event signage — where someone scans the code to open your tagged link, so even offline traffic is attributed to the right campaign in Analytics. You can download the QR as a PNG.
