Sales tax for every US state, instantly.

A sales tax calculator answers a question shoppers and small-business owners face every day: what's the real cost once tax is added, or how much tax was hidden inside a price I already paid? Pick your state, enter the amount, and this tool shows the sales tax, the pre-tax price, and the after-tax total in real time. It covers all 50 states and Washington, D.C., using each state's 2026 base rate.

Use Add tax when you have a price before tax and want the final checkout total — handy when budgeting a purchase or pricing a product. Use Remove tax when you have a tax-inclusive total and need to separate the original price from the tax — useful for expense reports, bookkeeping, or reclaiming the tax portion of a receipt. The mode toggle switches between the two instantly, and the selected state's rate is shown alongside the result.

State rates, local taxes, and the no-tax states

Sales tax in the US is set primarily at the state level, ranging from 0% in the five no-tax states up to 7.25% in California, the highest state base rate. Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon — charge no statewide sales tax, although Alaska lets local towns add their own. In most other states, cities, counties and special districts can layer local sales taxes on top of the state rate, which is why the combined rate at your local store may be higher than the base rate shown here.

Because local add-ons depend on your exact location, this calculator deliberately uses the state base rate so the figure is clear and predictable. For tax filing, e-commerce, or anything compliance-related, confirm the combined rate for your specific ZIP code with an official source. Everything runs privately in your browser — there's no account, no limit, and nothing you enter leaves your device — so you can check prices and totals as often as you like.

Accuracy note: This tool uses 2026 state base rates only. Local and county taxes are not included, and rates can change. Verify the combined rate for your location before relying on it for filing or compliance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

To add sales tax, multiply the price by the tax rate and add it to the price: tax = price × rate ÷ 100, and total = price + tax. To remove sales tax from a tax-inclusive total, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to find the pre-tax price, then subtract that from the total to get the tax. This calculator does both — pick your state, enter the amount, and choose Add tax or Remove tax to see the breakdown instantly.

Which US states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (often remembered as 'NOMAD' — New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, Delaware). Note that Alaska allows local municipalities to charge their own sales tax even though there is no state rate, so the final rate in some Alaskan towns is above zero. The other four are genuinely tax-free at the point of sale.

Does this calculator include local and county taxes?

No. This tool uses each state's base sales-tax rate only. Many states allow cities, counties and special districts to add their own local sales taxes on top, so the combined rate you actually pay at checkout can be one to several percentage points higher than the state base rate. For an exact figure, check the combined rate for your specific ZIP code with your local tax authority or a destination-based rate lookup.

What is the difference between adding and removing sales tax?

Adding tax starts from a pre-tax price and works forward to the total a customer pays — useful when you're pricing an item or estimating a checkout total. Removing tax starts from a tax-inclusive total and works backward to find the original price and the tax portion — useful for bookkeeping, expense reports, or figuring out how much tax was in a receipt. Toggle the mode at the top of the calculator to switch between the two.

Are these 2026 sales tax rates accurate?

The calculator uses published 2026 state base rates for all 50 states and Washington, D.C. State rates change infrequently, but they can be adjusted by legislation, and they never include the local add-ons that apply in many jurisdictions. Treat the result as an accurate calculation of the state base rate you select; for tax filing or compliance, confirm the current combined rate for your exact location with an official source.
