How do I calculate a discount?
To find the sale price, multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the amount saved, then subtract it: saved = price × discount ÷ 100, and sale price = price − saved. For example, 30% off a $80 item saves $24, giving a sale price of $56. Enter the original price and discount in the calculator's first mode and it shows the sale price and the saving instantly.
How do I find the discount percentage between two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price to get the saving, divide by the original price, and multiply by 100: discount % = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100. For instance, an item marked down from $120 to $90 is a 25% discount. Use the 'Find Discount %' mode — enter both prices and the calculator returns the percentage off and the amount you saved.
Why isn't 20% plus 30% the same as 50% off?
Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together. A 20% discount followed by a 30% discount leaves you paying 80% × 70% = 56% of the original price, which is a 44% total discount — not 50%. The second discount is taken on the already-reduced price, so combined discounts are always less than their simple sum. The 'Double Discount' mode shows the true effective percentage for any two stacked offers.
How do I calculate a percentage increase or decrease?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100: change % = (new − original) ÷ original × 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative one a decrease. For example, a price rising from $50 to $65 is a 30% increase. The '% Change' mode does this for any two numbers — prices, salaries, metrics — and tells you whether it's an increase or a decrease.
Is a big discount always a good deal?
Not necessarily. A large percentage off only matters if the original or 'list' price is genuine — some retailers inflate the reference price so the discount looks bigger than it is. Before buying, compare the sale price against what the item normally sells for elsewhere and against its typical price history. A modest discount on a fairly priced item can be a better deal than a huge discount off an inflated price.
