Interest of 18% per annum also applies on any unpaid tax from the due date. This calculator shows late fee only. Interest = tax due × 18% × days ÷ 365.
Know the late fee before you file
Missed a GST deadline? The late fee starts the day after the due date and adds up daily until you file. This GST late fee calculator tells you exactly what you owe, using the official CBIC rates, so there are no surprises on the portal. Pick your return type, say whether it is a nil return, choose your turnover band and enter the two dates.
The daily rate is straightforward. A nil return costs ₹20 a day, split as ₹10 CGST and ₹10 SGST, capped at ₹500. A return with tax payable costs ₹50 a day, split as ₹25 CGST and ₹25 SGST. The cap on a non-nil return depends on your turnover: ₹1,000 up to ₹1.5 crore, ₹2,000 between ₹1.5 and ₹5 crore, and ₹5,000 above ₹5 crore. The calculator applies the right cap automatically and shows the CGST and SGST halves.
Remember that the late fee is only half the story. If you owe tax, interest of 18% a year runs on the unpaid amount on top of the fee. So filing on time, even a nil return, is always cheaper. If you raise invoices, our GST invoice generator keeps your records clean, and the GST calculator works out the tax on each sale. Read the full breakdown in our GST invoice format guide.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much is the GST late fee for GSTR-3B?
For a GSTR-3B return, the late fee is ₹50 per day (₹25 CGST plus ₹25 SGST) for a return with tax payable, and ₹20 per day (₹10 CGST plus ₹10 SGST) for a nil return. The fee runs from the day after the due date until you actually file. It is subject to a maximum cap, so it does not grow forever. This calculator applies the correct daily rate and cap for your return type and turnover.
What is the maximum GST late fee?
For a nil return the late fee is capped at ₹500 in total (₹250 CGST plus ₹250 SGST). For a return with tax payable, the cap depends on turnover: ₹1,000 if your annual turnover is up to ₹1.5 crore, ₹2,000 if it is between ₹1.5 crore and ₹5 crore, and ₹5,000 if it is above ₹5 crore. The total late fee never exceeds the applicable cap even if the daily amount would add up to more.
Is interest charged in addition to the late fee?
Yes. The late fee is separate from interest. If you have unpaid GST, interest is charged at 18% per annum on the tax due, from the due date until you pay. Interest is calculated as tax due × 18% × days ÷ 365. This calculator shows the late fee only. You should add interest on any outstanding tax separately when working out your total cost of late filing.
Does the late fee apply per return or per GSTIN?
The late fee applies per return and per GSTIN. If you file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B late, each carries its own late fee. If you have registrations in multiple states, each GSTIN is assessed separately. The CGST and SGST late fees are charged in equal halves, which is why the calculator splits the total into a CGST and an SGST component.
Are there GST amnesty schemes that waive late fees?
The GST Council has periodically announced amnesty schemes that waive or reduce late fees for pending returns within a window. These are time-bound and change from year to year, so a fee you owe today might be reduced under a future scheme. Always check the latest notifications on the CBIC website at cbic.gov.in before paying, in case an amnesty applies to your situation.
