Where do you really rank?

Most people have no idea where their income places them. This Am I Rich calculator answers it in one tap: enter what you earn in a year, pick India or global, and see the percentage of people you out-earn. The result is often a genuine surprise, because the median income is far lower than most city professionals assume.

In India, the numbers are eye-opening. An annual income above roughly ₹10 lakh already puts you in the top 10% of earners, above ₹20 lakh in the top 5%, and above ₹55 lakh in the rarefied top 1%. Even a salary that feels ordinary in a metro can rank surprisingly high across the whole country of 1.4 billion people. Switch to global mode and the perspective widens further, comparing you against the entire world.

It is a fun, slightly humbling reality check, and it is built to be shared. Once you see your percentile, send it to friends with the WhatsApp or X buttons, or copy the link, which reopens the calculator with your figure. Curious what your income looks like after tax? Run it through the salary and tax calculator, then put it to work with the budget calculator and plan ahead with our retirement planning guide. Remember, this is informational fun, not an official statistic.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the Am I Rich calculator work?

Enter your annual income and choose India or global, and the calculator estimates what percentage of people you out-earn. It compares your income against income-distribution data, using anchor points such as the median and the top 10%, 1% and 0.1% thresholds, and interpolates between them. The result tells you your rough percentile, so you can see where your income sits among 1.4 billion Indians or the world's population.

Where does the income data come from?

The India figures are approximate, based on PRICE-ICE 360 survey data and Income Tax Department information. The global figures are based on world income distribution estimates. Income data is hard to pin down exactly and changes every year, so treat the percentiles as a fun, directional guide rather than a precise statistic. The thresholds are rounded for clarity, and real distributions have far more nuance.

What income counts as rich in India?

It depends entirely on where you draw the line. In India, an annual income above roughly ₹10 lakh already puts you in the top 10% of earners, above ₹20 lakh in the top 5%, and above ₹55 lakh in the top 1%. The median income is far lower than most middle-class city dwellers assume, which is why even a comfortable salary can place you surprisingly high up the distribution. Enter your number to see your own percentile.

Is the result accurate?

It is a reasonable estimate, not an exact figure. Income distribution data is approximate and changes annually, and our calculator simplifies it into anchor points. Factors such as household versus individual income, regional cost of living and unreported income all affect the real picture. Use the result as an eye-opening, shareable estimate, not as an official statistic about your exact rank.

Can I share my result?

Yes. After you calculate your percentile, share buttons let you post your result to WhatsApp or X, or copy a link that reopens the calculator with your figure. Your result is also encoded in the page URL, so the link you share shows the same number. It is a fun way to compare with friends and see who ranks where.
